HP Workstation Western Digital VR150 SATA HDD Firmware V04 Rev.A Description
This package provides a utility to upgrade the firmware on certain serial ATA (SATA) hard drives (HDDs) for the supported workstation models and operating systems. The firmware upgrade provides preventative firmware fixes for known issues, as well as a performance improvement in some configurations.
HP recommends that all appropriate hard drives be upgraded as a preventative measure.
The utility included in this package upgrades the firmware on the following Western Digital 10,000 rpm SATA Hard Drives that shipped on HP Workstations:
WD740HLFS-60G6U0
WD800HLFS-60G6U0
WD1600HLFS-60G6U0
WD1600BLFS-60YBU0
WD3000HLFS-60G6U0
WD3000BLFS-60YBU0
NOTE: The included utility checks to ensure that an affected hard drive model is installed before upgrading the firmware. If no appropriate hard drive model is found, the firmware is not upgraded.
After the update, the last character of the drive model string will be incremented from a "0" to a "1", and the firmware revisions will be "04.04V04".
The included utility creates a DOS bootable diskette (floppy), CD, or USB key that will contain all the files to update the identified hard drive. Alternatively, you can copy the update utility files to a bootable medium you already have.
To create or modify the bootable medium, follow the instructions in the MAKEIT.TXT file, which is located at the top level of the installed folder tree.
ENHANCEMENTS:
- Improves performance for operation under SATA RAID 0 configurations.
- Adjusts drive background maintenance processes to improve field reliability.
FIXES:
- Fixes an incorrect interaction that occurs with a certain host controller (timing-related).
PREREQUISITES:
NOTE: The firmware update utility cannot upgrade drives that are members of RAID arrays. However, it is possible to temporarily take the system out of RAID mode, perform the upgrade on the target drives, and then put the system back into RAID mode. Because the firmware upgrade does not affect the data contents of the drives, including their RAID membership data, the array will operate normally when the RAID mode is restored.
In all the supported workstation models for this update, the SATA controller mode can be managed via options in the BIOS F10 Setup interface. For specific instructions, see the manual for your computer model. This mode management does NOT involve deleting or creating RAID arrays.
NOTE: When using the USB key method on the HP Workstation xw9400, it may be necessary to disable the SATA Option ROM in order for the utility to successfully scan the SATA bus. Some of these temporary changes reduce the number of active SATA ports. If many target hard drives are present, they may need to be temporarily connected to lower ports for the upgrade.
- 2 MB of free space is required on the system to which the SoftPaq will be downloaded.
- A bootable DOS diskette (floppy) or USB key with at least 1.1 MB of free space, or a blank diskette (floppy) or writable CD, or a USB key that can be reformatted is required. The medium must be compatible with an available drive or port on the system where the SoftPaq will be downloaded, and the system where target hard drives need to be upgraded.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: It is STRONGLY recommended that you perform a system backup prior to installing this update.
1. Download the file by clicking the "Download" or "Obtain Software" button and saving the file to a folder on your hard drive (make a note of the folder where the downloaded file is saved).
2. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
To perform the update:
1. Boot the target system to your DOS-bootable medium.
2. Change to the folder containing the utility files and execute the wd2471.exe program.
If you are using a bootable USB key generated by the tools in this package, the critical files will be at the root of the C: volume.
If you are using a bootable CD or floppy generated by the tools in this package, the files will be at the root of the A: volume.
If you copied the files to a bootable medium that you provided, then navigate to the location you selected.
The utility will skip any drives that are not targets. It only updates drives that have one of the affected model strings.
3. When all drives have been updated, you must POWER CYCLE the system to ensure that the drives are fully updated.
It is highly recommended to always use the most recent driver version available.
Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver. This will help if you installed an incorrect or mismatched driver. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.
