- Be sure you have a backup of ALL critical data.
- Verify what OWC SSD generation and firmware you are using
- Restore image to 2GB or greater USB Flash drive (formatted Master Boot Record and FAT) or burn image to DVD using Apple Disk Utility.
- Plug in the USB drive or insert the disc into the Mac with the installed SSD to be updated.
- Please power down and disconnect all external storage devices attached to your system.
- Reboot the system while holding down the option key.
- Select the USB icon labeled "EFI Boot".
- The utility will boot to a selection list, where you can choose your machine model ID.
- The utility can take up to 2 minutes to load.
- Once loaded, review and agree to the Software License Agreement.
- The utility will automatically identify your drives.
- Select the drive to be updated.
- If your SSD requires an update click the Update button.
- After the update is complete/successful you will be prompted to Shutdown.
- At this point you can power up your machine and continue typical use.
- If your OWC SSD Firmware revision contains xxxA12F0 or xxxA13F0, then xxx365A12F0 or xxx365A13F0 is the most up-to-date revision, current as of October 20, 2011.
- If your OWC SSD Firmware revision contains xxxABBF0, then 603ABBF0 is the most up-to-date revision, current as of March 30, 2015.
Changing the solid-state drive (SSD) firmware version can bring about a wide variety of changes such as stability improvements for different sleep states, power consumption enhancements, increased read/write speeds, optimized compatibility with various systems, and many others.
However, performing this step is very risky because it can damage the SSD’s software in the event of an update failure. Therefore, make sure you consider changing the firmware only when and if the new version includes changes that you can make use of.
