NETGEAR DG834Nv1 Router Firmware 1.02.08 Description

New Features & Bug Fixes:

- This release has passed Wi-Fi 802.11n Draft 2.0 Certification from the Wi-Fi Alliance and Centrino Certification from Intel.
- Added support for Internet Group Management Protocol version 2 (IGMPv2) a communications protocol used to manage the membership of Internet Protocol multicast groups. IGMPv2 is used by IP hosts and adjacent multicast routers to establish multicast group memberships. IGMPv2 can be used for online streaming video and gaming, and allows more efficient use of resources when supporting these uses.
- Added support for Wi-Fi Multimedia Quality of Service (WMM QoS) to prioritize wireless voice and video traffic. WMM QoS is a feature that provides prioritization of wireless data packets from different applications based on four access categories: voice, video, best effort, and background. For an application to receive the benefits of WMM QoS, both it and the client running that application must be WMM-enabled. Legacy applications that do not support WMM, and applications that do not require QoS, are assigned to the best-effort category, which receives a lower priority than voice and video. WMM QoS is enabled automatically.
- Added support for Wireless Distribution System (WDS) under the Advanced menu. WDS allows a wireless network to be expanded using access points without needing a wired backbone to connect them. The DG834N can be configured to connect with other access points as a bridge (with wired clients only) or as a repeater (with wired and/or wireless clients)
- Added support for Wi-Fi Multi-Media Power Save (WMM-PS). WMM-PS extends the battery life of Wi-Fi devices by increasing the efficiency and flexibility of data transmission. With WMM-PS, the same amount of data can be transmitted in a shorter time and using fewer frames, while allowing the Wi-Fi device to remain longer in a low-power, "dozing" state. WMM-PS is enabled by default.
- Added a firewall configuration option to easily disable Instant Messaging ports which are open by default. To disable Instant Messaging ports go to the Firewall Rules page and check Close IM Ports.
- Added a checkbox to disable the firewall with Network Address Translation (NAT) disabled. If the firewall is disabled with NAT disabled the protections normally provided to your network will be disabled.
- Added a SIP Application Level Gateway (ALG) enabled by default to optimize VoIP phone calls that use the SIP protocol. This feature can be found on the Advanced WAN Setup page and can be disabled by checking the Disable SIP ALG checkbox.
- Enabled ITU G.992.5 Annex M which extends the capability of basic ADSL2 by doubling the number of upstream bits.
- Added support for Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) which is a licensed data link layer protocol for network topology discovery and quality of service diagnostics, developed by Microsoft as part of their Windows Rally set of technologies. The LLTD protocol operates over both wired as well as wireless networks.

About Router Firmware:

Before you consider downloading this firmware, go to the system information page of the router and make sure that the currently installed version isn’t either newer or matching this release.

Due to the large variety of router models and different methods for upgrading the device, it is highly recommended that you read and, above all, understand the installation steps before you apply the new firmware, even if you are a power user.

In theory, these steps shouldn’t be much of a hassle for anyone, because manufacturers try to make them as easy as possible, even if they don’t always succeed. Basically, you must upload the new firmware to the router through its administration page and allow it to upgrade.

If you install a new version, you can expect increased security levels, different vulnerability issues to be resolved, improved overall performance and transfer speeds, enhanced compatibility with other devices, added support for newly developed technologies, as well as several other changes.

If you’re looking for certain safety measures, remember that it would be best if you perform the upload using an Ethernet cable rather than a wireless connection, which can be interrupted easily. Also, make sure you don’t power off the router or use its buttons during the installation, if you wish avoid any malfunctions.

If this firmware meets your current needs, get the desired version and apply it to your router unit; if not, check with our website as often as possible so that you don’t miss the update that will improve your device.

It is highly recommended to always use the most recent driver version available.

Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver. This will help if you installed an incorrect or mismatched driver. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.
