Tomato Wireless Router Firmware 1.28 Description

Tomato is a small, lean and simple replacement firmware for Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS, Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54 and other Broadcom-based routers.

It features a new easy to use GUI, a new bandwidth usage monitor, more advanced QOS and access restrictions, enables new wireless features such as WDS and wireless client modes, raises the limits on maximum connections for P2P, allows you to run your custom scripts or telnet/ssh in and do all sorts of things like re-program the SES/AOSS button, adds wireless site survey to see your wifi neighbors, and more.

NOTE:

- Use this for most routers.
- This firmware is provided as-is without any warranty. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I will NOT be responsible for damages that occur due to the use of this firmware.

Routers that are known to work with Tomato:

- Linksys WRT54GL v1.x, WRT54G v1-v4, WRT54GS v1-v4, WRTSL54GS (no USB support)
- Buffalo WHR-G54S, WHR-HP-G54, WZR-G54, WBR2-G54, WBR-G54, WZR-HP-G54, WZR-RS-G54, WZR-RS-G54HP, WVR-G54-NF, WHR2-A54-G54, WHR3-AG54
- Asus WL520GU (no USB support), WL500G Premium (no USB support), WL500GE
- Sparklan WX6615GT, Fuji RT390W, Microsoft MN-700

This will not work on Linksys WRT54G/GS v5 or newer WRT54G/GS routers.

Upgrading to a new version of Tomato:

- Open Tomato's GUI in your browser.
- Click Administration, then Upgrade.
- Select any of the firmware files.
- Click the Upgrade button.
- Wait for about 2 minutes while the firmware is uploaded & flashed.

Installing from a 3rd-party firmware

Tomato's firmware files are standard formats and in most cases can be used to install directly from other firmwares. The only thing you need to do is open the router's current UI in your browser, and using the same method you use to upgrade the firmware, pick a Tomato firmware file appropriate for your router and "upgrade".

Note:

Some settings may not be compatible with Tomato. Resetting the router settings (Administration->Configuration) after installing Tomato is recommended.

Changelog:

- Fixes for udhcpc. Thanks to fedor for his help.
- Warn if saving an empty Access Restriction since it's the same as blocking everything.
- Add option in Admin:Access to select which menus are permanently expanded.
- Increase PPPoE username and password length.
- Increase limit for web_printf to avoid problems handling very long variables.
- Update Dnsmasq to 2.55.

About Router Firmware:

Before you consider downloading this firmware, go to the system information page of the router and make sure that the currently installed version isn’t either newer or matching this release.

Due to the large variety of router models and different methods for upgrading the device, it is highly recommended that you read and, above all, understand the installation steps before you apply the new firmware, even if you are a power user.

In theory, these steps shouldn’t be much of a hassle for anyone, because manufacturers try to make them as easy as possible, even if they don’t always succeed. Basically, you must upload the new firmware to the router through its administration page and allow it to upgrade.

If you install a new version, you can expect increased security levels, different vulnerability issues to be resolved, improved overall performance and transfer speeds, enhanced compatibility with other devices, added support for newly developed technologies, as well as several other changes.

If you’re looking for certain safety measures, remember that it would be best if you perform the upload using an Ethernet cable rather than a wireless connection, which can be interrupted easily. Also, make sure you don’t power off the router or use its buttons during the installation, if you wish avoid any malfunctions.

If this firmware meets your current needs, get the desired version and apply it to your router unit; if not, check with our website as often as possible so that you don’t miss the update that will improve your device.

It is highly recommended to always use the most recent driver version available.

Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver. This will help if you installed an incorrect or mismatched driver. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.
